Education in North America
Schooling is mandatory for all children aged six to 16 and the year runs from September to June.
Elementary, junior high and high school
Elementary school is for Grade 1 to Grade 6, and Grades seven to nine are spent at a junior high or middle school. From the ages of 15 to 18, students attend high school, where they gain a deeper understanding of the core subjects and choose elective classes. All students aiming for university must take the SAT entrance examination.
Community colleges
Community colleges provide programmes for high school graduates and are often used as a springboard to a four-year university degree. They have fewer admission requirements than four-year institutions and usually cost less. Students can take a two-year Associate’s degree and credits are transferable to a four-year bachelor’s degree.
Bachelor’s degrees at university
Undergraduate students often pursue a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts. International students must have an English level of at least TOEFL 525 PBT/ 194 CBT/ 71 IBT.
Graduate degrees
Graduate programmes are for students aiming for an MA, MSc or MBA. A Master’s programme lasts 18 months to two years, accelerated MBA programmes last one year and doctorates need additional study. MBAs often require a bachelor’s degree plus two years of managerial-level work experience. International students are required to have a TOEFL 550 PBT/ 213 CBT/ 81 IBT or higher English level.
