Parentesi tonde e quadre

In inglese, i termini bracket e parentheses possono creare confusione. In genere, il termine parentheses identifica le parentesi tonde () mentre il termine brackets identifica le parentesi quadre []. Le parentesi quadre [ ] sono usate per funzioni particolari, come fornire una spiegazione tecnica. Le parentesi tonde () sono usate, proprio come le virgole, per racchiudere un ampliamento del discorso, un inciso o un commento collegato al tema principale della frase, ma distinto da esso. Molti linguisti ritengono che, nella maggior parte dei casi, le parentesi possono essere sostituite da virgole.
