Nei periodi ipotetici 3, si può utilizzare il condizionale passato progressivo.

If this thing had happened that thing would have been happening.

Funzione

Il condizionale passato progressivo può essere usato nei periodi ipotetici 3. Si riferisce a un risultato rimasto incompleto dell'azione espressa nella proposizione introdotta da if ; questo risultato viene espresso come un'azione in corso o non terminata.

Esempi
  • If the weather had been better (ma non lo era), I'd have been sitting in the garden when he arrived (ma non lo ero).
  • If she hadn't got a job in London (ma lo ha avuto), she would have been working in Paris (ma non lo era).
  • If I had had a ball I would have been playing football.
  • If I had known it was dangerous I wouldn't have been climbing that cliff.

Il participio presente si forma con la forma base del verbo + -ing.
